Softwood composed of tracheids & narrow rays

A transverse section of balsam fir (Abies balsamea) wood showing two complete growth rings with very narrow late wood. Note the very regular, almost monotonous, character of the wood with very fine, almost indistinct uniseriate rays (arrows). The cambium should be somewhere above the top of the micrograph.
